Which electric cars have the biggest boots?

We check out some of the most family-friendly affordable SUVs

Overview

With more choice on the market than ever before, electric vehicles are becoming a much more realistic option for everyone thanks to ever increasing range and crucially for family buyers – boot space. Below we’ve picked out some of the best electric load luggers for under €60,000.

Skoda Enyaq

  1. Skoda Enyaq iV

Skoda are renowned for their spacious interiors and so when it came to their first electric SUV, it was no surprise that the Enyaq iV showcased one of the largest boot capacities on the market. At 585 litres it will take even the bulkiest of travel systems without any issues, with plenty of space in the rear for car seats and adult passengers alike. The Enyaq iV comes in three different battery sizes with electric ranges between 395 - 540km. Prices start at €44,390.

Volkswagen ID4 boot

  1. Volkswagen ID.4

Volkswagen’s ID.4 is another family electric option with its 543 litre boot and spacious cabin. Rear seat passengers get ample room to stretch out, with two sets of Isofix anchors for child seats, a handy pull-down centre armrest and two USB ports for charging gadgets. Prices start at €48,089 after government grants with a range between 504 and 517km.

Hyundai Ioniq5 boot

  1. Hyundai Ioniq5

Hyundai captured the imagination of many with the eye catching retro design of its new Ioniq5. While it might look like a blown up hatchback at first glance, in the metal it’s more on par with the larger SUVs it now competes with. In fact it’s longer than their bestselling Tucson, and wider than a Ford Kuga. Aside from its bladerunner good looks – it’s also an incredibly practical machine with a massive boot capacity of 527 litres and a deceptively spacious interior which will seat five adults in comfort. The Ioniq5 starts at €38,495 for the 58kWh model (384km) or €45,495 for the 72.6kWh long range model (481km).

Audi Q4 etron boot

  1. Audi Q4 e-Tron

It might be surprising to see an all-electric SUV from Audi in a list of cars under €60k, but the Q4 e-Tron represents good value for money here with a starting price of €48,805 for the Advance 35 which will do up to 335km on a single charge. More impressive still is the 520 litres of boot space which also makes it one of the more spacious options in this market. Legroom is generous in the back with ample room for child seats and two Isofix anchors to mount them securely to the chassis of the vehicle. Unfortunately, supply issues mean it might be next year before you can get your hands on one.

Kia EV6 boot

  1. Kia EV6

Based on the same platform, the EV6 is Kia’s answer to Hyundai’s wildly successful Ioniq5. Both cars have been busy scooping awards on every continent and it’s not hard to see why. A spacious interior combined with a generous level of high-tech safety and comfort features on board have made the EV6 an instant success. While it doesn’t quite match the Ioniq5 for bootspace at 490 litres, it’s still more than adequate to meet the needs of most families. The EV6 is only available with the larger battery here in Ireland and with a range of up to 528km starts at €50,000 after government grants.

MG ZS EV boot

  1. MG ZS

The MG ZS has been the surprise wildcard to shake up the market in the last couple of years. The badge which was once associated with sporty little convertibles is now synonymous with some of the best value EVs around. The ZS has enjoyed huge success here to date and it’s not hard to see why. The 488 litre boot would give most ICE SUVs a run for their money. Not only is it a decent sized family SUV with an impressive 440km range, the starting price of just €32,995 makes it a good deal cheaper than any other electric car of its size.

MG 5 boot

  1. MG 5

MG were also the first brand to bring an electric estate to the European market – much to the delight of those looking for something other than an SUV but just as practical. With a boot capacity of 466 litres, it can do an impressive 403km on a single charge. That’s quite an impressive feat, even if there are few rivals to compare it with just yet. The generic looks might not be to everyone’s taste but standard equipment is generous and the MG 5 makes for a good value and practical package.

toyota bz4x boot

  1. Toyota BZ4X

Toyota’s first fully electric model is set to make its debut here this summer and is already promising to take on existing rivals in all of the areas where it matters most – price, range and space. With a luggage capacity of 452 litres, the BZ4X can match most of its ICE rivals for boot space, and looks set to be similar in dimensions to its popular RAV4 sibling. A starting price of €43,402 and claimed range of up to 500km should ensure the long awaited electric Toyota has been the one worth waiting for.

Volvo XC40 recharge boot

  1. Volvo XC40 Recharge

The stylish XC40 Recharge comes in just below our €60,000 threshold with a starting price of €57,130. For that you will not only get a spacious 419l boot capacity and 415km range, you’ll also be treated to a stunning Swedish interior and one of the more engaging drives when it comes to electric motoring. Rear space is generous, with two sets of Isofix anchors for child seats, and a handy 30l of extra storage space in the ‘frunk’.

Kia e-niro boot

  1. Kia e-Niro

The e-Niro might look compact on first glance, but punches far above its weight when it comes to interior space. The 451 litre boot is 15l more than what you’ll get in a Nissan Leaf, and a spacious rear bench with two Isofix anchors makes it ideal for carrying small families around. The 455km range and starting price of just €€41,250 makes it one of the best value all rounders on the market.
