Peugeot’s new 308 hatchback will make you green with envy

Overview

According to Johnny Cash, there are 40 shades of green in Ireland.

I may have found the greenest of them all in the new Peugeot 308.

It is the most striking colour I have come across in a new car for a long time. It’s called Olivine Green and it is a masterpiece of tone and depth.

The new 308 was rolled out here during the week and it is a much different proposition to anything that has gone before from Peugeot.

Low-slung and long (11cm longer at 4.36m), it shows there is life in the family hatch yet.

The new car costs from €31,765 for the Active grade, with Allure at €35,705 and GT from €39,215.

Its low roof means you have to crouch a bit, but the extended wheelbase yields more space for rear passengers. The boot extends to 412 litres and with seats folded, there is a maximum of 1,323 litres.

Inside is a revelation. The new i-cockpit and innovative dash set it apart. You can now connect two phones in bluetooth at the same time.

Two plug-in hybrid versions are on sale now: a HYBRID 180 e-EAT8, two-wheel drive, 150hp 1.6-litre and an 81kW electric motor with an eight-speed gearbox. They claim 24g/km and up to 60km on 100pc electric range.

The HYBRID 225 e-EAT8 two-wheel drive combines a 180hp 1.6-litre engine and an 81kW electric motor. They claim 27g of C0₂ per km and up to 59km of 100pc electric range.

There is also a 1.2-litre, 130bhp three-cylinder petrol with eight-speed automatic or a 1.5-litre, 130bhp four-cylinder diesel with eight-speed automatic.

There will be a station wagon from July. A full electric version is due late next year.
