Corsa and Mokka now on sale
Opel has introduced its new hybrid lineup in Ireland, starting with the arrival of the Corsa Hybrid and Mokka Hybrid. These models offer the ability to drive electrically for up to 50% of the time in urban environments, catering to those who seek the benefits of electric driving without the need to plug in. Both vehicles are user-friendly and efficient, providing a notable reduction in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. Opel plans to expand this hybrid technology to the Astra range and the all-new Grandland and Frontera models in the coming months.
The Corsa Hybrid 1.2 100hp Stop Start is available in SC, Elegance, and GS trims, with prices in Ireland starting from €29,695, plus delivery charges. It offers fuel savings of up to 18% compared to a similar non-hybrid model, with a combined fuel consumption of 4.7 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 106 g/km. Customers can order it at Opel dealerships nationwide.
The Mokka Hybrid 1.2 136hp Stop Start, also available in SC, Elegance, and GS trims, starts at €34,995, plus delivery charges. This model offers up to 20% fuel savings compared to non-hybrid versions, with a combined fuel consumption of 4.9 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 110 g/km. It is likewise available for order across Ireland.
Both hybrids feature new 48-volt technology, combining a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. The petrol engine and electric motor can operate together or independently, ensuring an optimal balance between energy efficiency and performance.
The three-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol engines, designed specifically for hybrid use and compliant with the latest Euro 6.4 emissions standards, deliver peak power at 5,500 rpm, with maximum torque of 205Nm in the Corsa and 230Nm in the Mokka at 1,750 rpm.
The new 6-speed dual-clutch transmission, developed for hybrid applications, offers smooth, uninterrupted shifts and improved driving comfort. The transmission casing integrates the electric motor and DC inverter, optimizing size and weight for enhanced performance.
The electric motor, integrated into the gearbox, provides a peak power of 21 kW/28hp and a maximum torque of 55Nm. A belt-driven starter, combined with the electric motor, handles cold starts and ensures smooth engine restarts during stop-start driving.
The 48V lithium-ion battery, which is recharged via recuperation and the petrol engine, is located under the front left seat for optimal weight distribution, preserving full boot space.
The vehicles feature two electrical networks: a 12V system for standard equipment (like electric windows and the infotainment system) and a 48V network for the hybrid system. A direct current converter allows energy transfer between these networks, ensuring the 48V battery remains charged even after extended periods of inactivity.
At low speeds, the electric motor can power the vehicle for up to one kilometre or 50% of the time in city driving, such as during manoeuvring. The car automatically switches to electric mode when conditions are optimal. During deceleration, the petrol engine shuts off, and the electric motor recharges the hybrid system’s 48-volt battery. When the accelerator is released, the vehicle can coast with support from the electric motor.
Drivers can choose from three driving modes: Eco for maximum efficiency, Normal, and Sport, where the petrol engine runs continuously for optimal performance.
The driver information display provides easy access to important hybrid system data, including the current operating mode and energy status. When the vehicle is turned off, a trip summary shows additional details such as distance traveled, journey duration, average consumption, remaining range, and the percentage of the trip driven in electric mode.
