Volunteers from across Ireland invited to remove coastal litter
As part of an ongoing partnership with Clean Coasts Ireland, Kia have today announced that they are the official sponsor of the Big Beach Clean 2024 which takes place from 20th -22nd of September all over Ireland.
The Big Beach Clean is part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) and invites volunteers from across Ireland to remove coastal litter after the end of the bathing season. The data collected from this campaign is part of a worldwide citizen science project that aims to heighten awareness about the issue of marine litter and help to shape future policies in this area. Last year, over 400 groups registered to host a clean-up, with 7,700 Clean Coasts volunteers removing a staggering 46 tons of litter from Irish beaches.
Kia place sustainability at the core of their business strategy with a long-term goal of Carbon Neutrality by 2045. As part of this initiative, Kia is dedicated to using recycled materials in vehicle production, including recycled ocean waste. Kia is a global supporter of The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organisation dedicated to developing and scaling technologies to combat plastic pollution in the world's oceans. The plastic recovered from these operations is currently recycled and upcycled for use in the production of Kia EVs and by 2030, 20% of vehicle plastics will come from recycled materials.
Cathal Kealey, Head of Marketing & PR @ Kia Ireland commented “Kia Ireland are delighted to be the official sponsor of the Big Beach Clean 2024. Our support will ensure that cleanup kits are distributed to all volunteers that sign up to registered cleanups across the country. In line with to our global clean up initiatives that are designed to combat ocean pollution, we would urge as many people as possible to register for their local beach clean this September.”
Bronagh Moore, An Taisce Clean Coasts Manager commented “We are delighted to announce that registrations for the Big Beach Clean 2024 are now open. Every piece of litter removed and reported not only contributes to cleaner beaches but can lead to impactful campaigns and healthier oceans. Your participation in the Big Beach Clean 2024 helps amplify Ireland's voice in the global effort to protect our oceans. It’s a powerful reminder of how local actions can lead to significant global impacts. Join us in making a difference!”
