BYD expanding their presence in Ireland
BYD is expanding its footprint in the Irish market with the launch of the new BYD SEAL U Super Hybrid, a plug-in hybrid SUV featuring the brand's innovative Super DM (Dual Mode) technology. This move signals BYD’s ambition to enter the hybrid segment, building on its success in the Irish EV market, where it holds a top-five position as of September 2024.
The BYD SEAL U Super Hybrid is the first PHEV in Ireland to feature the company’s DM-i drivetrain, designed for maximum efficiency and intelligence. Offering a combined range of up to 1,080km and fuel consumption of 6.4 litres per 100km, it provides a practical, eco-friendly solution for both everyday driving and long-distance journeys.
With an 18.3 kWh battery, all-wheel-drive acceleration of 0-100kph in 5.9 seconds, and a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, the SEAL U is both powerful and safe.
BYD Super DM Technology
BYD’s Super DM Technology prioritizes electric power, minimizing fuel use. In EV mode, it runs as a pure-electric vehicle, while in hybrid mode, it switches to ultra-low fuel consumption, delivering a quiet, smooth drive.
A key part of the system is BYD’s cobalt-free Blade Battery, offering DC fast charging (30%-80% in just 35 minutes) and a pure-electric range of up to 80km. The hybrid also features a 1.5-litre Xiaoyun petrol engine, which BYD claims has the highest thermal efficiency of any petrol engine in the world, at 43%, for improved fuel economy and smooth performance.
Sales Director of MDL (BYD’s Irish distributor), Ciaran Allen, describes the SEAL U as offering, “cutting-edge technology that transforms the hybrid driving experience, delivering energy-efficiency, fuel savings, quick acceleration, and exceptional comfort.”
Model Range
The BYD SEAL U Super Hybrid is available in two models: Boost and Design, with prices starting from €42,150. Available at six dealerships across Ireland, it comes in four body colors and boasts aerodynamically-designed 19-inch wheels, sleek headlights, and full-width taillights for a stylish finish.
Inside, the SEAL U features Oceanic Crystal gear levers and a double-layer storage compartment in the center console. The rotatable touchscreen offers advanced infotainment and navigation with 4G connectivity and voice control.
Additional features include a sunroof, ambient lighting, keyless entry, and a premium sound system. The spacious interior offers generous legroom, multifunctional seats, and a 425-litre boot, expandable to 1,440 litres.
The SEAL U also comes with vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology, allowing it to power household devices or outdoor equipment, making it versatile for home or leisure use.
Safety
In terms of safety, the SEAL U comes equipped with Blind Spot Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Change Assist, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, aligning with BYD’s high safety standards and its Euro NCAP rating.
