The iX1 is the latest offering from BMW’s ever growing electric range.
While it may technically be the baby of the BMW X range, the iX1 makes for an ideal family car with its impressive mix of practicality and performance.
The iX1 can easily compete with the mainstream SUV market when it comes to space and practicality. The boot capacity is unaffected by the battery at a useful 490l and there is a generous amount of head and kneeroom in the back. We managed to fit two rear facing car seats without compromising on driver or front seat passenger comfort. Though the footprint may be compact (for a BMW), it feels far from small inside with a spacious and airy feel to the cabin helped by the clutter free centre console and minimalist design.
Equipment levels are suitably generous given the pricetag with a huge amount of functionality built in to the two large screens that stretch across the dash and behind the steering wheel. The infotainment system while busy looking at first is easy to get to grips with for anyone familiar with a smartphone. Heated seats come as standard, as does adaptive M suspension and BMW emergency call and online services.
The iX1 is powered by a 65kW battery capable of up to 465km on a single charge. This should be more than enough to suit most lifestyles, even if real world range is closer to 350km. It drives exactly how you would expect an electric BMW SUV to drive – powerful, smooth, refined and engaging. The power output of 313hp makes for a seriously quick take off, and when combined with the agile chassis and precise steering, makes it one of the most fun to drive options in the class.
The BMW iX1 offers all the luxury and performance of the X1 on an effective electric platform, and is sure to be a big hit for those after a stylish, practical and planet-friendly SUV. A growing appetite for electric vehicles on the used market means residual values should be strong. All new BMW i vehicles come with a 36 month BMW i warranty.
